All in one
archiver-unarchiver

This "super-script" will both create and uncompress many types of archive files: tar, bzip2, gzip, zip, and rar. It includes translations into many languages, and reads a configuration file to determine what your default compression scheme should be. archiver-config is a special script that sets up this config file.

This invokes the Gnome Archiver (meatgrinder) with the selected files meat-grinder is a gnome-base graphical tar.gz creator
